Project Description

Open Innovation Competition: Reducing Seismic Exploration Footprint

Deadline to apply: April 1, 2021

COSIA partnered with Foresight Cleantech Accelerator Centre to launch an open innovation competition, seeking seismic exploration technologies that reduce the environmental impacts of oil sands exploration.

Funded by Alberta Innovates, the competition features COSIA’s Land Challenge—Reducing Seismic Exploration Footprint. Seismic exploration evaluates underground oil sands resources using energy waves that can be used to interpret the subsurface geology. Current solutions require clearing corridors in the forest to put equipment in place to make the energy waves.

We are looking for technologies that reduce boreal forest disturbance from seismic oil sands exploration while maintaining seismic data quality to ensure safe and effective development of oil sands resources. In addition to reducing or eliminating tree removal, potential solutions should also be applicable for two-, three- and four-dimensional subsurface geologic profiling.

More information about the competition, such as details on criteria, eligibility and other requirements, is covered in our recorded webinar and challenge statement.

Intakes for the competition will be open from February 2 to April 1, 2021. Finalists will have the opportunity to pitch their solutions to COSIA members. A total of $15,000 cash* will be awarded to the winners.

*Note that the cash awarded is the prize for having the winning solutions, and not to buy out the technology. If our members are interested in pursuing a technology, they will reach out to the solution provider for further discussion.
