The German-Canadian Centre for Innovation and Research (GCCIR) acknowledges that we are located on Treaty 6 territory, and that newcomers to this region have benefited from the Treaty’s spirit of peace and friendship since 1876. We recognize and respect the histories, languages, and cultures of all Indigenous Peoples who made Edmonton their home prior to the building of our city, and who make Edmonton their home today.
The GCCIR is an initiative for the development of German-Canadian, and more broadly European-Canadian, research and business relations. Developing and fostering international and intercultural relationships is central to our organization, and a crucial part of this is welcoming and valuing one’s counterparts and their contributions. As such, the spirit of Tatawaw, which means “Welcome. There is room.”, resonates strongly with our mission. We commit to upholding the spirit of Tatawaw and continuing in this tradition to create space for all Indigenous and non-Indigenous people accompanying us on our journey.
As connectors and facilitators, we further commit to honoring Edmonton’s history as a place of gathering and exchange. Our work helps to keep Edmonton a vibrant place of collaboration, innovation, and trade, and we’re proud to acknowledge that we do this work following in the footsteps of a long and valuable Indigenous history.
